Why is codemeter from WIBU systems on my system and running?

I was looking at what programs Norton is allowing through the firewall and saw an entry for codemeter (WIBU Systems AG). I checked and it is in my registry as well as being a service that gets automatically started. I can find no instance of any of the WIBU license certification software being installed on my machine nor does any of it ring a bell. I suspect that it might be being installed by some other software on my system but I really can't find any evidence of that either. It produces log files with lots of entries about "private keys" etc but I don't see any evidence that it ever communicates or is communicated with across the firewall.

Does anyone know anything about codemeter and how it might have gotten installed?

    Thanks in advance,

    Howard

I don't really know but I have a idea you might want to check. I can't find any trial version but you can check the Norton installation and see if its a little on. I don't know why that would be. Also check if it came with any CAD programs that you might have. Something in the area of engineering, chemistry, architecture, ect.

Thanks. I don't have any of the programs that [might] use a dongle.

I removed it from the firewall, deleted the directory and all of its files, disabled the service and deleted the registry entry before rebooting.

So far nothing has complained. I guess it'll just remain a mystery as to what originally installed it.

Sorry to bring such an old post up but all of a sudden I'm seeing CodeMeter in my system tray and it was bugging the heck outta me why or what installed it. I finally figured out it was the music software REASON that installs it...i guess for their "ignition key" feature that allows a USB stick with the license to be used over a network.

So if there's software that allows some type of USB stick to run a license over a network..that's what probably installed it.
