What Kari was saying is when you install Windows the first account created will always be in the Administrators group . Which is true .

Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium

I wrote this long post and clicked first on "solved" and it wiped out my post. I was never able to complete the procedure because at the end I still got the "no such account exists" message. But your procedure ending in "...../add" did the trick because now I have an Admin account under which I was able to access my email account and delete the offending messages and now I have access again to my email program which puts me back in business. I'm most grateful for your help and I thank you profusely for your patience with this problem.

You don't really want to use the built-in Administrator account for every day use .

Win 7 64

New to the forum as a member but have been reading for some time.

Like many others, I am very frustrated with my [normal user] account, which has been a full admin account, being demoted. I can not elevate it again, regardless what I try.

Net localgroup says my account is already an administrator yet I don't have admin privileges. Logging in as Administrator - the built-in account lets me do everything except elevate my normal user account back to full administrator privileges.

I would be eternally grateful if someone - ANYONE could help me fix this back the way I want it.

Thanks in advance.

Change Standard User to Administrator

What worked for me is to go to desired User and click on change user account type. It will show Standard User. Click on change user account type and you will return to the previous screen. Click on change user account type again, then select Administrator, change user account type will no longer be grayed, click change user account type and it should change user to Administrator type!

I used this to be able to control hibernation. Standard User cannot control hibernation. Hope this helps as it took me more than a day to solve.
