You mean outbound turned off or what, I'm not sure what you mean otherwise as I don't see any setting in WF to allow all automatically.

I guess that's basically the same as my new outbound rule to enable all, which sort of defeats the idea of a fiewall in the first place. My mystery is why does VFC only pop-up to ask for applications and not the network or any services?

Hi Peter,

The WF default is allow all outbound - since you changed it, you needed to create an allow all rule, or reset to defaults, I imagine.

VFC does let your network and ms services connect - it has a kind of whitelist - it's only to stop apps. or keyloggers etc. dialling out without your permission.

Comodo has a whitelist too - it lets ms services dial out.

I didn't use Comodo as it is another large app. with a fancy gui to load at startup. IMO VFC does a good job.

Default is outbound turned off in other words. I did create a rule allowing all while keeping WF O/B on.

It didn't let mine connect and never asked. I can only connect if I turn on the outbound WF rule.

Hi,

When I first installed installed Vista, I wasn't connected.

When Vista detected I was setting up a connection-it asked what type - Private or Public etc. VF set itself up depending on that answer.

VFC then just goes with that - it doesn't need to ask as you can only connect if you have already told VF what to do.

Installations since then I am already connected and at the end of the install I get asked what type of connection - select one - and again VF or WF , whichever sets up it's own firewall rule for that and VFC doesn't need to ask.

I have never had to configure anything manually.

Thanks for all the help guys. My problem was trying to understand why I was disconnected from the web when I enabled WF outbound protection because as you know, in its default state, WF only protects inbound.

I installed VFC and it didn't help even when I manually entered IE and FF as "Enable all".

I then gave WF a rule to allow all outbound. I doubt there is much point at that stage of even having WF outbound turned on as it will basically let anything through.

That was why I was questioning everything.

Yes Peter, it is odd that it lets everything dial out by default - I suppose M$ figure UAC will help.

Tho they do provide a way to configure it manually , it would be much easier if they had built in something in the Notification area that would pop up.

Hi,

I'm just curious as to why WF didn't ask what type of network you wanted.

For me, a window has always popped up with a little picture of e.g. a house for home network, and a park bench for public network.

I'm assuming that when I select one of those, WF sets up the appropriate rules - anyway I have never needed to do it.

I'm also assuming that's why VFC never interferes with the network connection - it thinks that has been set up.

I could be wrong -wouldn't be the first time . LOL.

It did ask when I first setup, but it does that when outbound connection aren't being monitored anyway don't forget.
