[solved] Getting a firewall installed on windows 7

Hi, I've got everything installed now on my shiney new install of windows 7 except a firewall! Bitdefender I've found isn't really compatible and I tried comodo but it would not install. I tried running it in compatibility mode for vista and it just gives me that annoying programm has stopped working error. Installing it without compatililty works but then it rolls back and uninstalls. Any ideas on how to get it to install? or if not suggest another firewall? (not windows) Many thanks.

Some people have successfully installed Comodo, but warning, it is hell to uninstall if you change your mind. I think it's the free Security Suite that you use and then opt only for the firewall part.

I just use Windows Firewall and an application called "Vista Firewall Control" which enables easier configuration of WF.
WF is configurable in W7 to both outgoing as well as incoming protection but it is hell to get it configured, something that MSFT could certainly improve upon.

I don't know why people always think windows firewall sucks, it works just fine.

My VFC doesn't seem to want to help with outgoing permissions though....am I doing something wrong?

    Hi,

On 7, usually VFC will pop up the Edit window when an app. tries to connect - and you just enable as on Vista.

Make sure the pop-up is not disabled under settings

Very rarely, the edit window doesn't pop up - depends on the app.

If that happens you need to add the app. to VFC manually . like this

Then you browse to the app. and select Open.

Or you can just Enable All momentarily

Well, I enabled WF outbound protection but I can't connect to the internet at all, even with Internet Explorer and Firefox anabled in VFC unless I enable my own outbound WF Rule enabling all connections. Why MS had to make WF so darned difficult I have no idea. It should pop-up asking for permissions like my McAfee one does in all my other setups.
VFC did not ask, I had to input IE and FF myself, but it still would not permit me access to the internet.

Thanks I tried that windows firewall control and it's very handy - I do like the principle of it blocking traffic for all programs until you add them in to the allow list - thanks for that. At the end of the day it seems to be the only firewall I can get working. I've got my router firewall as well so hopefully I should be safe. :P Thanks again for the help all. :)

    Hi Peter,

I just leave leave WF outbound protection at default, i.e. allow all.

I then let VFC control the outbound.

Otherwise you may have to both let it through VFC and also separately configure to let each one through WF .
