I ran AVG (which I downloaded first before I downloaded Avira or Avast) and it caught the StormAlerts Ad virus (it kept popping up whenever I opened a browser. But even when it said it got rid of that adware, after I reboot the computer the adware was still there! I tried scanning with Avira but it didn't catch that virus. Sometimes I see it running in the background in Task Manager.

Is there no way of just turning off the background process permanently instead of uninstalling Avira, etc?
I would like to use it sometimes if I feel like I need to instead of having to redownload it all over again.

Did you want to keep this backup program?
Did you intend to install this backup program or is it a little something that slipped in while downloading something else.
As I and others have recommended before. One ant virus on one computer at one time.

It is not a good idea to have multiple anti-virus products installed on the same computer. Modern AV products have multiple processes, services, and drivers, any of which may interact with those of another product in undesired and unpredictable ways. These are highly advanced and complex products that are bending the rules of how applications are supposed to behave. But do so they must if they are to perform their intended purpose. AV products were never designed to coexist with others.
Pick one AV product that you wish to keep and uninstall all others. There is no safe way to do otherwise.
Note that Malwarebytes is not considered an AV products and is exempt from the above.

7 times in this thread members have recommended to run only one anti virus at one time one one computer.
whs has posted #7 a list of removal tools to remove the extra anti virus programs. You have been asked to scan and removed the little extra things you got when downloading programs.
I'm at a loss on how to guide you farther until you comply to the previous suggestion and recommendations.
You don't have to do the suggestion, it's your computer but I strongly recommend you follow the guidance you have been given.

My experience is just the opposite, AVG killed my performance and Avira did not. I think that system config makes a big difference in how A/V runs on a particular box. I would try different ones and then use the one that worked the best for you. I think in the long run it's worth the time and effort to do so.
MBAM can run in the back ground or used as a weekly check, user choice. You could do the same SASW. I have the commercial version of both MBAM and SASW, I'm not going to renew SASW as MBAM seems to cover everything I need.
For my needs I have not found a better combination than MSE and MBAM.
