Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

2 and 3 OK. 1, permission denied - require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder.

The key one is:
C:\Program files\Microsoft Security Client rename to C:\Program files\Old Microsoft Security Client

Try this tutorial to take ownership of the folder, and then rename it:
Take Ownership Shortcut

By the way, did you have Windows Defender running at any point?
Does it run now?

If it does not run, press the Windows key and the R key.
At the Run prompt, type the following:

sc start WinDefend Enable
Press: OK

Then, try running Windows Defender.

Amazing. Done. Installed but did not run a scan.
Don't know if Defender is always running. Searched for it and it reports Your computer is running normally. No unwanted or harmful software detected.

MSE is installed. M Security Client is in Program Files, Program Files (x86) and in Program Data\Microsoft (also Microsoft Antimalware) and MSE is in All Programs. Running Quick Scan, after it auto-updated, as I type - nothing detected.

What now??? We have made a lot of changes.

Yes!!! Good job!!!

Use the computer for a day or two, and I will get back with you after reviewing the entire thread and determining what we need to do.

You will see my next post on Tuesday (your time).

Windows 7 Home Premium

G'day, Bill!

If you are no longer having problems, you are good to go!! :)

Let's wrap up, as well as remove certain settings and the tools used, with their reports.

Change Settings:

First, please click on the Windows 7 Start button and then on Control Panel
In Control Panel, select the Folder Options link.
Click on the View tab in the Folder Options window.
In the Advanced settings area, locate the Hidden files and folders category.
Uncheck: Show hidden files, folders, and drives
Check: Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
Click Apply and OK at the bottom of the Folder Options window.

Also, please remove Take Ownership:
Download and instructions > Context Menu - Take Ownership

Tools and Reports:

The tools we used are updated frequently, and their use may need interpretation. Please remove the following, including the icon on the Desktop, and any associated reports:

-Farbar Recovery Scan Tool, its folder in C:\FRST, and any FRST.txt, Addition.txt, fixlist.txt or fixlog.txt on the Desktop.
-Farbar Service Scanner, and its report FSS.txt
-Eset ServicesRepair Tool, and its report SvcRepair.txt
-Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit, and its reports mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt
-Security Check, and its report checkup.txt
-TDSSKiller, and its repoprt TDSSKiller.X.X.X_15.10.2013_15.31.43_log.txt
-HitmanPro, and its HitmanPro_20140303_1258.log
-RKill, and its report RKill.txt
-MSE.txt, results of Command Prompt
-Microsoft Security Essentials Removal Tool
-SystemLook, and its report SystemLook.txt

Would keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and use it regularly, in tandem with Microsoft Security Essentials.
If you have USB pendrives or SD cards, connect them to other computers, and then connect them back to your computer, the MBAM Perform Full Scan has the option of selecting which drives you want to scan, and includes removable drives.

As far as keeping Spybot Search and Destroy, that is your option.

Malware can be installed through vulnerabilities found in out-dated and therefore unsecured programs.
Make sure your security software is ALL updated and running, as well as the programs identified on by SecurityCheck.

Also, consider doing the following...

There are many useful add-ons that can protect the browser(s) used from possible risks:
  • Web Of Trust (WOT) will warn you when you visit sites with poor reputation.
The reputation is based on user ratings and is usually very accurate.
  • Script Blocker can help blocking many attempts to infect your system via malicious websites by only allowing
    scripts at sites you trust.
  • NoScript is a popular Firefox add-on,
  • ScriptNo is a well known
    Google Chrome add-on.
For more useful information, also read Tony Klein's excellent article:
How did I get infected in the first place

Hopefully these steps can help you stay malware free. However, if you run into malware issues, come back. Will certainly do what is possible to help you.

Thanks for following all the instructions and providing the reports!!

Have a great day, Bill48 !!

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

OK. Thank you.
Have to assume that Take Ownership remover download did its job.
C:\FRST did not like being deleted. It caused Windows Explorer to stop working. I still have Revo Uninstaller, so used it. Found 21 files and 96.8 MB to delete. This baulked and Revo could not finish its job. FRST is still in C:\.
Deleted FSS and txt files.
Deleted Services Repair and its txt file. Deleted MB AntiRoot and its associated folder. Ditto Security Check. Ditto TDSSKiller and report. Ditto Hitman Pro. Ditto RKill.
Must have already deleted MSE.txt and its removal tool.
System Look deleted.

Apart from FRST deletion/uninstall, I think all is done and the desktop looks bare.

Have taken on board your advice and recommendations.

Bare thanks is scarcely adequate.
