    MSE Updates not automatic

I've been using MSE for the first time since only a few days ago, on a used computer that it came with. The biggest drawback that I see is that it needs manual definition updates. I see that it will check for new definitions before a scheduled scan, but other than that, it needs to be updated manually.

I've been used to Avast and AVG updating automatically, not just every day, but several times a day sometimes.

What's your experience with the adequacy of MSE?

If you are careful, MSE will be fine for you. MSE ignores certain types of malware and MSE's heuristics are very poor. It could not stop or remove this small bit of malware documented here: MSE worries

You can set the scans to happen every day...
    ...thus getting updates every day.

You can create a scheduled task to have MSE check for updates as often as you would like.

    Thanks.

If I need to install Avast, should I disable MSE from starting or uninstall it altogether?

MSE updates come via the windows update system as Optional updates,
See how your windows updates are set to install windows updates,

Most scanners will check for and install updates before running a scan = this is normal for any scanner,

These days most threats are Malware,
No 1 Antivirus specializes in Malware not even Avast,
The only thing we can all agree on is a user needs a real time protection Malware suite no matter which Antivirus suite is being used,

And if you want a tracking cookie eater use this/ the free version is fine as wine,

The most unpredictable thing about Avast is it's updates and what local programs it tags as corrupt,
Avast is very slow at correcting false alarms like this,
    Cheers.
