    Panos,

    I don't want to detract from the effort you and other members have made or are making on this issue, but after a week of hard investigation and attempts to provide a piece meal fix there is no solution.

    I've been in this situation before (many times !) and eventually made the decision that it would be easiest to reinstall than to chase what is causing the issue.

    A fresh install also allows me to have a faster cleaner machine. Many applications I had previously installed really weren't used enough to justify reinstalling them, or it provided the opportunity to update them.

    Since you have an Asus and an Acer that exhibit the same symptoms, but not your GF's machine then I'd say it is isolated to your machines and not the router / modem.

    If you decide to Clean re-install, don't add all of those apps at one time. Add only a few and see how the machine behaves for a few days. Then add a few more and again see how it behaves. This way, if you install a few apps and the symptoms reoccur, you have a smaller pool of suspect applications to investigate.

    This of course is your decision to make.

    Best of luck,

    @slartybart
    In all respect possible,
    If ubuntu has the same issues I do not believe that a clean install will solve anything. No settings are shared from windows to ubuntu. Ubuntu is running off a live cd disk, and malware from windows will not run in ubuntu. So it rules out a software issue if the ubuntu disk firefox is crashing as well. This to me means it is a hardware issue of some kind.

    Your computer that we are working on now, is that hardwired to the network? Ethernet cable? OR wifi?

    You have another laptop on wifi with the same crashes, yet your GF who is also connected with their laptop to your router does not have any crashes-fails to load correct?

    This is very odd.

    What happens if you try firefox in ubuntu from the live cd on your laptop? Crashes-fails to load as well?

    Do you have a modem and router all in one unit? Or do you have a router and modem as separate devices?

    Here is my suggestion, Reset both the devices to factory default. You can call your Internet service provider with help on this if you bought the equipment from them.

    If the reset does not work.....try buying a new router and new modem. Or a new all in one device.

    Did not mean to cause you to leave, and I really hope that was not taken rudely. I am not good at expressing/explaining that...
