How to uninstall McAfee prior to installing alternative security

Is there a 'recommended' way of uninstalling McAfee Internet Security, or can the program simply be uninstalled through the 'add or remove' utility?

I read that security software had to be removed with the PC in safe mode. Is that right?

    Thanks in advance

No, it can be normally removed through the control panel as long as you are not using a paid version. If possible, I reccomend you uninstall the new AV and THEN uninstall MCAfee then install the new AV again to make sure MCAfee did not mess with the installation of the new one.

No. Safe mode isn't required. Just use the uninstall utility.

Thanks both Golden and Computer0304 for really prompt and helpful responses. It is a paid version and I'm going back to the MCAfee website to sort that bit.

You're welcome. To deactivate, you need to run this tool How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee products using the Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR) from MCAfee AFTER uninstalling through control panel. You may have to search the equivalent page on the MCAfee site for your region for it to work correctly.
