What should one expect MSE to do?

To me, Security Essentials sounds like it covers computer/internet security but apparently not (see post #5). Every .exe file I download I scan with both MSE & Malwarebytes before doing anything. This particular WinRAR file was OK with no threats by both. During install I denied every add-on offer & Malwarebytes still found 30 PUP files afterwards. MSE missed them all, apparently not considering them a threat.

Would Bitdefender or Kaspersky Total Security do a better job or miss PUPs, too?

Technically a PUP isn't a threat. What is a PUP?

    Scan all downloads with:

    PE Studio

    VirusTotal Scanner

    If you use Firefox:

    Metascan Firefox Add On released

Or scan any download before you actually download it:

    Dr.Web CureIt!

    MS Security Essentials-kmplayer.jpg

KMPlayer download link scanned. Software is bundled with a PUP.

If you get caught out by a PUP add the executable to the list of blocked executables and you won't see it again.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting read. But, threat or no threat, I don't like anything installed on my PC other than what I want install. Don't they know, no means NO!

I purchased Malwarebytes (had free version before) & also have installed Pe Studio; keeping MSE.

I've used it before. I wouldn't call my experience bad, but I felt it didn't protect me from threats as it was supposed to. Also, a lot of these newer AV's block unsafe downloads or they will ask you if you trust this download if it's suspicious. When I used MSE, it didn't do that. Other than MSE, I've used AVG, Avast!, Norton, Panda, and Comodo. Panda and Comodo seem to do the job for me.

I use MSE and mbam pro/ premium and everything is fine,
I also use superantispyware but that's just a cookie monster but still have the pro version of it

    Yikes someone said Mcafee
At least it was a second choice

I don't use McAfee. A lot of people say it isn't any good. I stopped using AVG for that same reason. I used AVG for a long time.

I understand that McAfee's problem is it doesn't play well with Windows 7.
Your computer doesn't run long enough to get infected.

Any program that doesn't play well with Windows 7 on my computers don't stay on my computers. I don't care who or what tells me they are great.
My chain of command on my computers is Windows 7 is first and I'm second.
For happy computing you must keep Windows 7 happy or nothing works as it should. It's my job to learn what keeps Windows 7 happy and safe.

At the present time it's MSE and Malwarebytes Premium active with SAS on demand.
When need be a few on demand security scans from different programs.

Yep, I said McAfee... then I forgot to mention that it's the business edition (desktops and servers) which can be used also for home computers if someone wish to install it and I have NOT seen/experienced any issues.

I like to experiment on different AV and Security products - Free and Paid, also Home and Business editions.

MalwareBytes is a good program. I haven't ever heard anything bad about it.
