Nope - I'm at home.

If that doesn't help you could ask on the Avast forum, maybe someone there would be able to help.
My guess is you will be told to do a "clean uninstall / reinstall".

I just saw the post from RolandJS - that's a good idea /question !
Great - my first update with Avast and it's screwed up and I might have to uninstall/re-install. Amazing. What is wrong with these anti-virus companies that they can't complete an update without breaking the software and forcing a re-install? This is a huge upset to my day and that's why I got away from Avira. It's bad when your anti-virus becomes as annoying as actually having a virus (pop-ups at reboot, corrupted installs).

Okay - I rebooted my PC from the actual reboot link under Settings>update.

After reboot, the same control panel still popped up. This time, under Settings>update, there is nothing indicating that it needs a reboot. So as ridiculous as it sounds, rebooting my PC normally wasn't allowing Avast to finish the update properly - I actually had to reboot from the link in the program itself to reboot. Talk about ridiculous.

So according to the software, it's updated fine now. But I still can't figure out how to stop the user interface from appearing after every reboot. There's got to be a way to disable this from happening - why would it start to happen after this last update? Is there some hidden checkmark I'm missing in the settings?

When you updated Avast it installed itself in msconfig/Startup or Services.
You need it checked but you don't need all the options for Avast checked marked.

Take a look and one at a time uncheck them and see what happens. You can always check mark them again if need be.

I was able to tame Avira on my other laptop via msconfig. I don't know why Avast is misbehaving!

Many programs add thing to msconfig when a upgrade is done and some do it also when a update is done.
I just keep a eye on msconfig to make sure things I don't want are added.
Things like automatic updates.

I took a look in msconfig under startup, and the only entry for Avast (which is checked) is:

AvastUI.exe /nogui

Under services the only entry is Avast Antivirus.

So there must be something else going on. There are lots of settings in the Avast user interface but I've looked and looked and can't find where I can stop this from popping up at boot.

Still haven't figured this out. Every time I reboot or shut down and restart later the user interface appears after boot.

imho you shouldn't have this problem.
I haven't read anyone else report this problem on the Avast forum.

You could try checking Silent/Gaming Mode in Settings General to see if that makes a difference.
I doubt it will help, but it's free to try.

You could also review your installed tools and options to make sure you have installed only what you want.
Here is a post showing how to see your installed Avast options, and uninstall want you don't want.
the dwindling free space on my C

That thread is about losing HD free space, but the "uninstall instructions" should work for any "Avast options".

I don't get why this would suddenly start happening after an update. It didn't used to happen for the first couple weeks I had it installed.

Here's what I have installed for Avast using your link above:

- File Shield
- Web Shield
- Mail Shield

- Browser Protection
- Software Updater
- Rescue Disk
- Browser Cleanup
- Home Network Security
- Secure Virtual machines

Everything else is not installed.
