Possibly, Jack. Getting the timing right for tapping the key is crucial. But the link might be lost. This would point toward continuiing with a boot disk on the other steps using Lenovo OneKey or F12 keys to boot the disk.

Again, you can rescue your files at any time which is mentioned in the very beginning of Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start and which I mentioned in introducing that link and then again in my last post.

I think you are thinking of the hard drive being 1tb. RAM would be nowhere near that much. Again my point was if you do the reinstall that you need 3gb or more RAM to comfortably run 64 bit Windows 7.

Take some time when you get back to it to catch up with every step that has not been tried, or ask back how to do them until you understand fullly and can perform each. Often times the skipped step is the fix so let's not let the thread go on for pages longer while there are uncompleted steps.
Thanks for sending me the program. I am going go download it now. However, please tell me something - if I install this will it wipe out everything that is on my computer or will it just be an operating system and I will be able to get to everything. Thanks for everything you are doing for me. I will go back and make sure I did everything I was told to do. I have responded to everything I did so shouldn't be hard to check.

I answered the RAM thing in my post #55. I have 6GBDDR3 RAM and 1TB hard drive. Sorry I was a little confused with all that is going on.

This is all explained in Clean Reinstall Windows 7 which you should be following to get and keep a perfect install.

Yes, it will wipe out your C drive and replace it with a new OS. That would be best after suffering such a serious infection. So follow the steps to make sure you are backed up fully.

You might be able to settle for a Repair Install which keeps all programs and files in place or can try that first to see if it is sufficient. But you need your files backed up anyway.

I read both of these and I'm willing to admit I am way over my head and don't understand either of them. I don't know how I can back up something I can't get to and how and where would I put it if I could. I guess I just have to admit Avast has me defeated. I don't have an OEM code for my Windows7HomePremium and the last time I got to where it wanted me to sign in as Adm it wouldn't take my password. I am and always have been the only user on this computer and I am Owner/ADM. I think my WD external drive was backing it up constantly as long as it was running. I disconnected it when I got that advice to disconnect externals that might be causing a problem. This is a perfectly good computer with lots of years left on it but not without software. (Kind of like me) Many years ago I had a great software program called GoBack and it saved me many times. It came on before Windows loaded and if you needed to go back to a previous fully operational date, it would take you there. I wish they hadn't quit making it.

I don't know what to do now. I am totally devastated. Thanks for trying to help me.

It shows how to rescue your data in Step 2 of Reinstall tutorial. You said you have an external hard drive in the same post you say you have no place to back it up.

Most of the 1.5 million consumers who have used Clean Reinstall Windows 7 are also inexperienced yet were able to ask enough questions and follow the steps to get it done without a single complaint.

So start back over at the top and make notes to ask back all the questions you need.

If you want to do the back up steps and make the other preparations, then I will walk you through the reinstall on the telephone until you can get online to install TeamViewer Download then will connect to complete the install for you.

Or you can try Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start using the Windows disk you have now to see if you can get it to boot to run Startup Repair, System Restore or the other repairs listed.

Or you can take it to a shop.

Is the computer in your specs, the same one you're working on? If so, I'm beginning to wonder about the removal of Avast and I see Norton in your specs as the Antivirus now.

    3. while still holding the power button lug in your pc and let go of the power button

Thank you for this response to my pity party, Greg! Your challenge was just what my over-inflated Leo ego needed to make me determined to accomplish this feat. Plus your more than generous offer to help me via telephone also boosted my spirits. I have never been a quitter but I am just feeling overwhelmed right now. I didn't know it would give me an choice to back it up to the external hard drive which I will plug back in to my computer. Two of my sons have birthdays today and tomorrow and also with tomorrow being father's day, I am very involved with family. I will start fresh Monday morning and get this done, probably after I ask a million more questions. First question now is, should I start back from the beginning of my post and attempt to complete all those things again first before going on to these steps?

Thank you so much for not just being glad to get rid of me but still trying to help me. I have gone from being so depressed (which is NOT my usual demeanor) to being encouraged again.

Jacee, if you will reread my first post that started my thread, I explained that I uninstalled Avast and that box popped up saying to complete the uninstall, I needed to restart my computer. Not wanting to start my computer without protection, I installed the Norton and then tried to restart my computer which wouldn't restart.

If I had it to do all over again, now I could see what I might have done differently but as I have told many people over the years, if I knew what the results of my actions were going to be before I did things, a lot of things would have been different in my life. Using the expression, "you should have done ............" after someone has already done something only serves to alienate them and does not help the situation. No one on here has said "you should have done" to me thankfully.

I did not want Avast any longer. I was having problems with the paid for version, it wasn't doing what is was supposed to and it took 18 hours for it to do a full scan, so I certainly didn't want to downgrade.

I will try what you are suggesting, although I'm not sure I can hold down the power button and reach the plug with my other hand. I am very short and one is on the floor and the other on top of the computer tower that is on top of a desk table.

Thanks for responding to my post.

Then there's nothing that will stop you from having a perfect install if that's what you want to do!

And it's up to you whether you want to start back at the top and work through the repairs with our help now that you have a Windows 7 disc.

However if you're motivated to do the reinstall we can help you achieve a perfect install which you can then save as a backup image to use in place of future reinstalls if such serious problems ever come up again.

And my offer is still good to help you remotely if you want.
