In your last post there are remnants of Norton, Please download thier uninstaller REBOOT, and see if you can reinstall MSE, it would have been usefull if you had said trying to reinstall MSE>>> after norton<<< in your 1st post

Thanks for the insight...I ran the Norton Uninstaller and rebooted.
Unfortunately, the exercise was futile. Same error message persists.
Regarding your comment about not mentioning Norton previously, I had originally uninstalled Norton well over a year ago and only recently did I experience my difficulty with uninstalling/reinstalling MSE.

Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
When you have completed Jacees instructions.
Could you go control panel > folder options > (blue dot) show hidden files.(apply/ok).
Then goto C:ProgramData and see if the norton file is stiil there, if so delete it.
W7 has always had trouble reinstalling MSE after another AV has been used

I did what you suggested...I see some Norton folders remaining....here's my dumb question - should I just delete the folders using the basic "Delete" command (using the mouse) or do I need to delete them in a more sophisticated way?
Also, when running the Norton Uninstaller tool...my Google Toolbar disappeared and can't seem to recover/reinstall it using the instructions/download from the Google site. Is this in any way related to my problem with MSE?

Just right click on the folder it will give you a dropdown select delete and away you go.
Its also possible that Norton files are still in the program files & program files X64 folders if so please delete them as well.
As for your google toolbar i suspect yes. What browser are you using?..

Delete the remaining MSE registry subkeys:
- Windows 7, click the Start button, and then click Run.
- Type regedit, and then click OK. If a User Account Control window appears, click OK.
- Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- In the details pane (right pane) click Microsoft Security Essentials, and then click Delete.
Delete installer subkeys:
- Windows 7, click the Start button, and then type regedit
- Type regedit, and then click OK. If a User Account Control window appears, click OK.
- Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Uninstall\Microsoft Security Client
- In the details pane (right pane), click Microsoft Security Essentials, and then click Delete.
- Under the alphanumeric keys, search for the following entries, right-click each entry, and then click Delete for each instance that you find:Microsoft Antimalware Service XX-XX Language Pack (Be aware that the XX-XX placeholder is actually the installed locale id, such as DE-DE for the German MSE. Therefore, this key is not present on en-us installations)
