    Hi Roy,

Thanks for the insight...I ran the Norton Uninstaller and rebooted.

Unfortunately, the exercise was futile. Same error message persists.

Regarding your comment about not mentioning Norton previously, I had originally uninstalled Norton well over a year ago and only recently did I experience my difficulty with uninstalling/reinstalling MSE.

Download Security Check by screen317 from
    http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe
    or http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/
    Save it to your Desktop.

Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

    after jaycee instructions

When you have completed Jacees instructions.
Could you go control panel > folder options > (blue dot) show hidden files.(apply/ok).
Then goto C:ProgramData and see if the norton file is stiil there, if so delete it.
W7 has always had trouble reinstalling MSE after another AV has been used

    reset hidden files,

    Roy

    Hi roy,

I did what you suggested...I see some Norton folders remaining....here's my dumb question - should I just delete the folders using the basic "Delete" command (using the mouse) or do I need to delete them in a more sophisticated way?

Also, when running the Norton Uninstaller tool...my Google Toolbar disappeared and can't seem to recover/reinstall it using the instructions/download from the Google site. Is this in any way related to my problem with MSE?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

    Yo Tallguy,
Just right click on the folder it will give you a dropdown select delete and away you go.
Its also possible that Norton files are still in the program files & program files X64 folders if so please delete them as well.

As for your google toolbar i suspect yes. What browser are you using?..

    Greetings Roy,

I deleted the remaining Norton folders. I tried to reinstall MSE - unfortunately, the same error message popped up.

    Thanks....

I honestly do not know of any programs that I've installed...(I try to be very cautious about allowing anything to infiltrate my system.)

Just a quick note regarding a post I made previously. Any thoughts about these items?

    Quick thoughts...

I just did a search using my Registry Editor and came up with two items that appeared odd...

    Here they are:

    • EAABCF9D27BDB884690DA03A8C290C6D-- 22:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft AntimalwareSetup\RememberedProperties\MARKET

    • c:\programfiles\microsoft security client

(Note: This folder does appear Windows Explorer even after I unhide hidden folders.)
Could it be that that there are still traces of MSE in the Registry (following the uninstall process) that are interfering with a new install effort?
    1. Windows 7, click the Start button, and then click Run.
    2. Type regedit, and then click OK. If a User Account Control window appears, click OK.
    3. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    4. In the details pane (right pane) click Microsoft Security Essentials, and then click Delete.
Delete the remaining MSE registry subkeys:
    1. Windows 7, click the Start button, and then type regedit
    2. Type regedit, and then click OK. If a User Account Control window appears, click OK.
    3. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Uninstall\Microsoft Security Client
    4. In the details pane (right pane), click Microsoft Security Essentials, and then click Delete.
    5. Under the alphanumeric keys, search for the following entries, right-click each entry, and then click Delete for each instance that you find:Microsoft Antimalware Service XX-XX Language Pack (Be aware that the XX-XX placeholder is actually the installed locale id, such as DE-DE for the German MSE. Therefore, this key is not present on en-us installations)
      Microsoft Antimalware
      Microsoft Security Client
    6. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client
    7. In the details pane (right pane), right-click Microsoft Security Client, and then click Delete.
    8. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware
    9. In the details pane (right pane), click Microsoft Antimalware, and then click Delete.
    Delete installer subkeys:
    1. On Windows 7, click the Start button, and then type regedit in the start search box.
    2. Click on the icon. If a User Account Control window appears, click OK.
    3. Locate the following subkey: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products
    4. Under the alphanumeric keys in the ProductName field, search for the following entries. Note the numbers for each instance that you find. Then, right-click each entry, and click Delete for each instance that you find:
    Microsoft Security Client
    Microsoft Antimalware
Microsoft Antimalware Service XX-XX Language Pack (Be aware that the XX-XX placeholder is actually the installed locale id, such as DE-DE for the German MSE. Therefore, this key is not present on en-us installations)

Did you follow the above instructions ... exactly?

Did you ever run TFC? (temporary file cleaner)? This is important for you to do!
