    Hi Jacee,

    The answer is yes to both questions...in fact, I inspected the Registry - using the instructions above twice before today and I just did it again. And yes, I ran the TFC.

    There were no instances of finding the subkeys referred to in the above instructions.

    That being said, here is what I noticed this time through the Registry.

    I scanned the entire Registry to find instances of "Microsoft Security Client" and found numerous instances of it - including quite a few with "Microsoft Security Client" as the folder within the Program Files folder when a location was cited.

    ==> However, I know/think that particular folder was deleted during the uninstall progress. I just looked again for the folder and files using Window Explorer (unhiding all folders, etc.) as well as using the Command Prompt to examine the dir of c:\program files\.

    There is not one instance of "Microsoft Security Client" in the folder/file structure despite being referenced in the Registry. To this novice investigator, it seems like the Registry still "thinks" the "Microsoft Security Client" folder and its files remain in the folder structure when, in fact, they are no longer there.

    Also, the only other thing of interest I found in the Registry was the following entry for "Microsoft Antimalware Setup\RememberedProperties". Again, I could not located this folder/file anywhere in the folder/file structure in Windows Explorer or with the Command Prompt utility.

    Below is a copy of the entry in the Registry.
    Code:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware Setup\RememberedProperties]
    "MARKET"="en-us"
    "INSTALLDIR"="c:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Security Client\\"
    "PRODUCT_SKU"="MSEv2"
    "SIGNATURECATEGORYID"="6b9e8b26-8f50-44b9-94c6-7846084383ec"
    "REMEDIATIONEXE"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Security Client\\msseces.exe"
    "PRODUCTLOCALIZEDNAME"="@C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Security Client\\EppManifest.dll,-1000"
    "PRODUCTICON"="@C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Security Client\\EppManifest.dll,-100"
    I hope this summary makes some sense to you even though I'm obviously not a technical wizard.

    Don't hesitate to let me know what questions/thoughts/suggestions you may have. Believe me when I say your support/assistance is very much appreciated and never taken for granted.

    Thanks again,

    K----

    Okay, it looks like you have some 'left-overs' still in the registry.

    I see some Norton and Comodo, as well as Conduit (search protector).... download Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems
    Search for these 3 items and uninstall everything related to them, nothing more!

    Reboot/restart. If you still can't install a fresh copy of MSE, then will give advice for another 'free' Antivirus.

    Hi Jacee,

    I tried using Revo but searches did not result in any files, etc. to be deleted. It appears it only looked at the files structure and not the Registry.

    Maybe I'm just using it incorrectly.

    Going back to my previous post...how does one eliminate references in the Registry to files/folders that no longer exist?

    Thanks,

    One additional question...do Registry Cleaners really work? Any recommendations?

    Hi Kevin,
    In my earlier instruction regarding removing Norton,
    Can you do the same for Comodo, then run/post DDS again

    STAY AWAY FROM ANY REGISTRY CLEANERS.

    Yes and no. They can help to find stuff, but you need to know if it is safe to delete that stuff. Most of the stuff that they find is best left alone. It is harmless. Or worse, it is still needed.

    I'll let Jacee answer your questions concerning Revo.

    Once you are being helped by someone for problems like this, it is best not to do too much on your own.

    I agree about not using registry cleaners ... however you said you have CCleaner. Open the program and click on the registry icon. Be sure to click 'yes' to save/backup what you find for the programs listed above.

    Now go through each of these individually:
    [scan]
    Applications
    Application Paths
    Installer
    Obsolete Software

    If you click on 'fix problem' ... you will find the backed up files in your Documents with letters cc_xxxx <--x's indicating numbers. This is in the case that if something goes wrong, you can click on the backup and choose to restore it.

    Let us know what CCleaner found.

    Greetings...

    My quest is over....I came across a post in another website which provided the following instruction:

    "....Many suggested solutions recommend to delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\UpgradeCodes\1F69ACF0D1CF2B7418F292F0E05EC20B].

    What they fail to mention is that on current systems, there might be "Micosoft Security Essentials Client Update Package" installed. To reinstall MSE, after going through the usual MSE v2 removal instructions (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2483120), also delete this key:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\UpgradeCodes\26D13F39948E1D546B0106B5539504D9]
    (which contains 77B248F0AE65FAA42859180A2253B0E5)..."

    After deleting this key, I was able to successfully reinstall MSE.

    A sincere thank you to all that offered assistance, most especially Jacee!
