    MSE scheduled runs hang after recent Updates

    Is anyone else seeing this? I have Security Essentials scheduled to do a full scan overnight every weekend. The last couple of weekends after getting up I've found that MSE has hung; the tray icon shows that its still "spinning" but it really has just hung up, with a problem in msseces.exe. The last time MSE ran a scheduled scan to completion was 12/5. So sometime after that, I'm assuming a MS Update caused some incompatibility. I do updates fairly often, so there are quite a few that I have no idea how to narrow down. Any help appreciated.

    I launched a Full Scan and it hung after a little over an hour, shown below. When I Canceled the scan, it appeared to cancel but the tray icon will still spinning.

    MAMB also stalls and MSE in Safe Mode also stalls. I ran a disk check and there are no errors being reported for this disk. I'm starting to get worried.

    Try with the Eset on line scanner, normal mode first if that fails Safe mode with networking.
    Dissable MSE before running

    MAMB = malwarebytes?

    Thanks Roy. I'll do that.

    I figured if there's a small chance it is a disk problem I should do a backup. I did a cloning of my disk with Acronis True Image and it completed successfully without barfing and any disk read problems, which I'm happy about. But it makes it seem even more that there is something going out of its way to stop scans from completing. Is there such a virus known to do such a thing?

    Yes.

    Eset online scanner stalled about 90% of the way in. Up to that point it said nothing was detected.

    I tried uninstalling and reinstalling MSE. Kicked it off. It hung inside of 5 minutes. It appears anything tied to running AV scans on my machine will not complete. Everything else appears to run fine.

    This is getting beyond a simple MSE problem so I started a new thread.

    Suddenly, no AV/malware program I tried will complete

    This one can be considered closed.
