I would recommend using a slightly lesser known but well equipped firewall known as PrivacyWall.

Privacyware - IIS Web Application Firewall, Security Data Analytics, Personal Firewall

Do note that they have not developed the software in sometime, but they do support XP to WX. (Windows 10). (The way Windows 10 should be mentioned, WX).

I don't believe that this is free. It's a Trial version then you pay.
I have never heard of this Privacyware. Is it a new company?

Privacyware - IIS Web Application Firewall, Security Data Analytics, Personal Firewall

I have been using the built in Windows 7 firewall on two systems for years without problems.

If you want an industrial strength firewall take a look at Comodo

They do a Free full security suite or independent components

The Firewall is available from Here

I run the full suite in combination with Malwarebytes Pro but the firewall alone integrates well with most other security, and most peoples needs are not as strict as mine

As with any higher end software it does require a bit of a leaning curve, but It does include it's own training mode which sets things up over a short period to run as you want it to

I've been running and installing on many systems for years :)

Agree with the Comodo Firewall suggestion but it's not exactly user friendly. I've used it for the last few years.

I disagree with Comodo Firewall. It comes packed with adware and if you do not select custom installation, it will be a living hell. Be sure to select custom install.
And the Personal Firewall is free.

I think it's a great alternative to the Windows Firewall. I disable the Windows Firewall, waste of my resources. I use KIS2016 instead.
