    Catch 22 -- Norton 360 Beta and Win 7

I have a problem with Norton 360 beta and Win 7. There is a dll file within Norton that causes Explorer to crash whenever you try to right click to do anything. Not only that, it crashes when you select a file and choose "Properties" from the Menu, so I can't delete it, rename it, or change it in any way. I'm at a loss about how to fix this other than deleting Norton, which I'll probably do if I can't find a fix.

    Hi Hmil3,

I am afraid that there is always a chance of incompatibilities when dealing with a beta system this is of course multiplied when dealing with two Betas.

All I will suggest is that you inform both Microsoft and Symantic/Norton of your problems and hopefully this will be corrected as soon as possible.

If you check the forum you will find that there are can help with your security until this issue is corrected

    Thanks

Thanks. I'll probably wait a couple of days to try to find a solution. One person responded that I could use ShellExView to disable the file (NavShExt.dll). I tried that but the file wasn't listed within the program. I'm not clear on how to disable it. I have already posted this in the Norton Forum.

    Hi Hmil3,

You could have a look for the problem DLL using Autoruns from Syinternals.

This allows you to disable any addon running at startup either temporaraly or perminently. The display is a little complicated but iwhen you find the particular .DLL entry it's a simple matter to un-check the box and reboot to remove virtually anything - might be worth a try

    solution

I decided to just avoid the problem by uninstalling Norton and installing Avast. It seems to work in the background fairly well without causing file problems. Thanks for all your suggestions.

I could not get to not give me a black screen of death (had to go to safe mode and unistall N360). That includes all builds from 7000 to 7077. Keep hoping that Norton will fix it as I paid for it already.
