    Microsoft Security Essentials Update Utility

One disadvantage of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is that it uses Windows Update to update the virus definition files. If you disabled the Windows update for some reasons MSE won’t update anymore.
The MSE Update Utility can be used here to update MSE even if Windows Update is disabled.

Why in the world are you disabling Windows Update? Just set it to "Never check for updates" if you want to manually do it. But disabling Windows Update altogether is just stupid, honestly. Might as well not even run an antivirus if you turn off your first line of defense.

so if you have Windows Update disabled, MSE wont update by going to the Update tab and clicking update, or by checking the box that says "check for updates before scheduled scan" ?
