Having problem/issues choosing an Antivirus program

I have disliked Antivirus program ever since Peter Norton created his first version. And now dislike everyone since. But they are a "necessary evil"

The reason is, they are intrusive. Norton is the worst about demanding you follow HIS rules of what you can and can not have on YOUR computer.

I realize most are for the inexperienced user that use their PC as email servers but I have over 55 years iin Computers and want to be the master of mine.
I have tried ESET, NORTON, AVG, Kaspersky, McAfee and most of the big names........

My objection is not to the known virus detection but to the "programs/competitors, or other programs THEY do not like as if they are the policemen of my PC"
Most will detect a program they do not like, even competitors and remove them without asking you.
If it looks like a keygen, they delete it without even asking.

So I have been trying to find a Antivirus that is a SCANNER only, none of this REAL time protection that asks too many questions, block lots of thing when you are working on things.
I tried ESET today and it will not let me get on to my Stock Brokerage account at all as it pops up a screen wanting me to activate some protection and when I go back to my Brokerage account site, ESET keeps over riding even I said NO to the option. I finally had to UNINSTALL ESET to get to my Stock account.
Does anyone know of a good SCANNER only that scan when I WANT to scan, LETS me choose what to delete when it finds something suspicious?
I do not like their GESTAPO tactics. Am I alone in this feeling?

Surely someone makes an antivirus that is for professional users that allow them to control their equipment.

I feel your pain, but that's an inherent part of what a real-time scanner is. They're designed to be as invasive as possible, and tamper with each file opened to scan it for viruses. The obvious solution to this "invasiveness" is to throw away the whole real time scanning thing.

I can recomend what I use, ClamWin Antivirus that fulfills that requirement exactly. It's just a standalone program, with no real-time scanning, just runs when explicitly invoked. No popups or any other thing. Being open source is also a nice extra too.
Updates are also frequently available, and it will remind you to update if it outdates formore than 5 days (and will respect you if you say "no" ).
As a negative point I could say that the program is not very well know and many reviews frequently omit it (although it's widely know that those reviews aren't all that reliable).

I dont object to real time anti-virus as much as THEY determine what I can have and not have.
All they need to do is ASK us to review, then decide to clean or not.
But when I used Peter Norton when he first made his available, after a scan lots of programs just disappeared. And I remember that it was almost impossible to uninstall his stuff, it was like he took over your machine.

You can try Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

as I found them like Norton, Gestapo like tactics. That ole, "screw you WE know best".
It took over my PC and was also impossible to get rid of. I would go out and find a program was gone and only to find it they had deleted it on their own.

Did not ask me IF I wanted it to delete it or not.
I was looking for a Virus scanner to FIND potential virus and tell me, then ASK me what to do, not for an another "PC god" or boss. I bought the PC, not them and it is up to me to decide.

But, Thanks anyway as I know they do a good job of scanning......
