Windows 7: TPM not working - help!

22 Mar 2017   #1

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Hi all,

I'm running Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit, with Bitlocker encrypting both of my drives. I also have TPM enabled in BIOS, and the Bitlocker software shows that "TPM is on and ownership has been taken".

I have saved the Bitlocker recovery keys for both drives in three separate locations (USB stick, burnt to CD, plus on an encrypted cloud-based file).

So I tested the protection by changing my BIOS boot order to boot from a USB stick. I then booted from a USB stick which has the Windows 7 installation files on it. To my surprise it booted from the USB and got me all the way to the 'choose your language, etc' page for installing Windows 7 - without me being challenged for the recovery key!

Does anyone know why TPM did not kick in and stop the USB boot? This is a little worrying.

Bump! Anyone? I have since found out that my drives DO remain encrypted, as although I can boot to Win 7 installation page from USB/DVD, or command prompt, the drives themselves aren't readable. Good news!

So how does Bitlocker work with the Windows log-on password? Is that what is giving the 'order' to unencrypt the drives? As obviously once I log into Windows all the files are unencrypted
