Windows 7: AVG not installable

AVG not installable

I began using Malwarebytes several years ago because AVG was interfering with my piano software.

But Malwarebytes simply bites. It's slow. Painfully slow.
It's not like a Yugo next to a Ferrari.
No, not even a horse-and-buggy next to a Ferrari.
It's like a Roman chariot. Without a horse. With a broken axle. Stuck in the mud. At the bottom of the Pacific.

So I went back to AVG last month (free version). A version much newer than I'd used years ago. It worked well enough, mostly.

But this version kept urging me to upgrade because my "Internet protection was expiring in 30 days".

After 30 days I thought I'd still have the resident AV protection, and only lose the (worthless) Internet protection.

Well, no! I just reached zero days and AVG quit working. Nothing works. It just demands an upgrade. Effectively it's "pay up or get out".

So I got out.

Then I tried to install Avast. All I got was an install screen with a scrollbar/worm that shuttles to the left and shuttles to the right endlessly, like a pendulum ... forever and ever. And ever. And ever.
Kill. Delete. Gone.

So then I tried Avira. Click. Install. It works.

What's going on in the AV world?
Malwarebytes bites.
AVG breaks.
Avast won't install.
What else can go wrong?
