Windows 7 update loop - unsure how best to fix

Windows 7 x64 SP1

I decided to do a full Windows reinstall a few days agp for various reasons and have done one earlier in the year without incidence. However, this one is causing me endless hassles primarily with an update loop that occurs on a cold reboot.

I have automatic updates on with notification but have usually let most get installed happily until now. Everything works fine before my nightly shutdown but then when I switch on the next day as soon as it gets to the logon page, I get a message firstly that it's applying updates & not to switch off = after 15 mins or so that then changes to the "Failure to apply updates" msg. Thankfully I was able to get online on my laptop to try & get some info on a solution but most seemed to be aimed at updates failing within Windows rather than those that failed prior to Windows loading properly.

At any rate I found that if I run through System Repair and select a Restore point (which will fail as well !!) reboot, use F8 & then select the Last known good config - I can usually manage to bypass it.

The first update shown as Failed is:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3156019)

Installation date: ‎02/‎11/‎2017 01:06

After that, there's about another 30 or so failed with an odd Successful one showing.

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80242016

I'm just installing them all yet again (this is the 3rd attempt to install them).

BUT before I give up on it completely and just do another fresh install, I figured it worth asking if anyone could point me in the best direction since I do at least have Windows running currently?

Hi TikkiRo,

It would be quicker to do a clean install, but if the same problemS arise then it could be that your install media is corrupt. As you've only just done it

If it was just updates it would be worth a look but with the system restore failing as well, not so good.

Thanks for that - problem may have resolved itself last night - I installed all the updates it showed (183+) and just left it running overnight. Came up today to find it had rebooted into the normal login page perfectly SOOooo here's hoping. Oh yeh - I nearly forgot - I'd removed the Software Distribution folder as I'd read somewhere about that helping - time will tell. But yes you're right - otherwise there's bigger problems than I can quickly fix so if I find it stalling on the reboot I'm about to do shortly which will be a cold rather than warm then I'll just do a reinstall. Many thanks :)
