Symantec Endpoint is excellent and light on resources, there are versions for x86 and x64 versions of the W7 operating system. Unless you have any very special needs it's worth using the Windows native firewall in lieu of the Symantec one.

I'm using v12.0.122.192 and am adamant it catches far more than many rival products.

Well, I pretty much do the same things on line as you and I find the Win7 firewall along with MSE works nicely on my laptop as well as the desktops.

Avira Antivir Premium : Has an excellent detection rate, a phishing filter (Webguard) and more.

...Avira also has a free version, which is the same detection engine, without webguard, email scanning, antispyware etc.
If you don't mind using a selection of different programs to do the same job, you can find free programs that will perform very well.

You get what you pay for, but still need to be careful not to buy crap.

Refer to trusted virus suite comparison tables on popular websites and don't for one minute believe anyone that tells you a freeware product can seriously compete with one of the top notch paid for ones.

NOD32 isn't bad on detections, but there are some other issues with it.

    Kaspersky ranks up there nicely.

I made another recommendation earlier in the thread.

The number of times I've heard people say they've scanned their system and it's clean, only to find that the definition of 'clean' actually means that their el-cheapo freeware virus client is simply incapable of identifying nasties!
