How do I prevent a recurring screen redirect?

I've started getting a notification from (supposedly) Gmail in the lower right corner of my screen followed in about 2 seconds by a full-screen redirect to a Google screen (https://www google dot com/gmail/about/) asking me to sign in. This activity started about 5 days ago and occurs about every 5 minutes. Of course, I close the tab, but it is very annoying and interrupts what I was doing on legitimate sites.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Lenms

I just noticed that this thread has a green "Solved" check mark at the top. This is not my case. I do not know to which thread the "Solved" indicator applies, but it is not mine. My PC is a personal PC used only by me.

    Thanks,
