MSSEssentials Help

I have my windows update configured to notify me and only I can select/choose to update or not. Lately, it seems there is a Windows update for Microsoft Security Essentials everyday. I don't know about others but if I ignore the MSE update long enough it will eventually install itself. So much for my option to choose! Also, at one time I think they were 'optional', but now are coming to me as 'Important'. Also, the MSE updates (as far as I am aware) seem to be the only ones that bypass my settings and install themselves like this.

SO, how can I just tell my machine "Hey! Stop bugging me everyday with a 'new (mse) update is available' popup and just go and install yourself" for the Microsoft Security Essentials app updates only?

You're better off with Bitdefender free. MSE is just a baseline scanner.

you're off-topic - plus it will not stop the updates from coming in.

MSE defs have several antimalware and antispyware updates every day.

I have Windows Update set at "Never check..." in its Admin Tool and from Automatic to Manual in Services. Ever since they implemented Patch Tuesday, I don't see any value to to notifications and don't care to argue that if anyone sees otherwise, thank you. I just open Windows Update every now and then and check manually as well as keeping up with the relevant news feeds.

The MSE client 4.10.209.0 has been around since Nov 2016 and an unlikely upgrade to that will no doubt be virally reported in the pro and geek media. Who needs a notification from the OS?

If you go the disable update route, you should implement a recurring MSE defs update by creating a Task Scheduler task using System credentials for
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate
(Your path to MpCmdRun might be different.)

Alternatively, you can run that manually in Command Processor or in another scheduling app.

I have mine set for every four hours.

FYI: the MSE Network Inspection System Engine and defs are handled by the occasional run of
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\\MpCmdRun.exe" SignatureUpdate -ScheduleJob -RestrictPrivileges -Reinvoke
which I believe is embedded in the Microsoft Network Inspection Service (NisSrv.exe) and not under user control.

That activity is reported in
C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\Temp\MpCmdRun.log
