Needing to tighten Advanced Firewall Settings

I was wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial of some sort that explains in easily understandable non-geek plain English with or without curse words How to Eliminate ALL UNNECESSARY port openings, AND what all those different things that we can allow/disallow are actually for, and whether they are needed or not.

I realize I can google all the above, like, what is WSD, SSD, ICMP, and what's it for, but - come on!! There's got to be a better way.

I would suggest to disable everything by default and then whitelist the programs that you want to access Internet.

Make sure to get a copy of Windows Firewall Control 5.3.1.0 while you can.

Snick - lol, Google is most definitely NOT your friend. I can't even remember when I last used it. I'm all DuckDuckGo with gets better every day. (I only used Google as a verb for convenience sake because saying I ddg'ed it sometimes still raises eyebrows.)

Thanks lolnothankyou. I was thinking of setting firewall to default and then refine it. I have a feeling I opened unnecessary ports in my quest to reestablish a lost internet connection.

I do notice that in Task Manager there are quite a few that say Not allowed. Not restricted. But they sometimes happen to be on the same port that I know needs to be open. Not sure how to deal with that.
