dd-wrt dot com firmwares Asus Routers running this buy

I am wondering about ways to keep win 7 around longer. My thoughts for some people that only use their computer for writing email that maybe a hardware firewall that limited internet use to gmail... ?
I am interested in routers that have USB 3 ports on them for sharing 4t hard drives with 3 - 4 users and then use the custom firmware from dd-wrt Just thinking the custom firmware might be the way for people to hang on to older systems. Its seams a properly configured hardware firewall would protect even windows xp systems ?? Any comments ? many of us do not want to get rid of our windows 7 computers ! and maybe firewall is the answer ?

A hardware firewall will do the job, as far as it can, it will protect against attempts to attack the system from an external source. However, there is no protection against an, as yet undiscovered, Zero Day vulnerability for the OS itself. For a while there will be 3rd party anti malware suites that may be able to protect the systems but eventually these will not support The OS, as we are seeing with Vista and XP.

I think it may be possible to continue use of an unsupported OS for a while but eventually lack of software support, and more seriously, Hardware support (drivers and physical hardware), will make it more and more difficult
