I have MSE installed. Should I remove Windows Defender, and if so, how? I can't find it in Programs and Features.

First make sure you have a system restore point and a system image before you try this. But do this to get rid of defender

I had the same problem recently, all I done was open CCleaner and went to Tools>Startup>Windows and deleted the startup entry for it :).
