    MS Security Software

    Hello All,
I have just installed Windows Security Essentials for Windows 7 onto my machine,as I understand it to provide much more comprehensive protection -
I have been using Windows Defender, and wanted to ask the community if both of these are necessary, or can I Uninstall Defenders?? Thanks

I asked the same question recently, and the answer was that MSE does both jobs. So no, you don't need WD.

    • AI Overview

No, Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials are not the same, but they are both tools that can help protect your computer from viruses, spyware, and other malicious software:

    • Windows Defender
A built-in antivirus and antimalware solution that comes with Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows RT. Windows Defender continuously monitors for security threats in real-time.

    • Microsoft Security Essentials
A tool that can be used to protect computers with older versions of Windows, such as Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP. Microsoft Security Essentials provides most of the same protection methods as Windows Defender, but it doesn't include rootkit and bootkit protections.

Windows Defender helps protect your computer from spyware and some other potentially unwanted software, but it will not protect against viruses. In other words, Windows Defender only protects against a subset of known malicious software but Microsoft Security Essentials protects against ALL known malicious software.

If I have Microsoft Security Essentials do I still need Windows ...

I'd keep both, BonziBuddy protection sounds neat.

Add Microsoft Security Essentials to the Control Panel

You do not need Defender as Defender only uses spyware, whereas Security Essentials have more features which also includes spyware.

Question: I have installed Security Essentials and would like an icon in the Control Panel. Does anyone know the answer? I have made a shortcut for the Taskbar but would also like the Control Panel icon. I have managed to delete Defender from the Control Panel thanks to the forum!
