I have Avast and it doesn't scan the email for Windows Live Mail so do I need to upgrade or get a new Virus Checker?

It probably needs pointing at your POP and SMTP server ports, and may require further information only you can provide, in order to scan your mail... try clicking the Avast help file and reading a little about the product and it's capabilities...

Avast will scan it as long as Web Shield is enabled.
Web Shield scans all internet traffic.
Email is internet traffic. Its scanned
