It looks right 4.29 MB download?
Are you able to get all updates from Windows?

Just to make sure I didn't have a bad dowload file, I re-downloaded and reinstalled for same results.

In situations such as this I like to give my generic I-don't-know-the-answer-but-this-always-works reply: Have you tried a Repair Install?

I haven't tried this yet. Was hoping I might avoid this as I have never had to do before (and therefore a little uneasy about the process) and I need to have a chunk of quiet time that I can set aside for this (which I won't have until next week). I was also hoping that there might ultimately be an explanation. But, given the amount time that several experts have given to this issue I am guessing that it may just be inexplicable and that a repair install is my best option.

Jonathan - thank you for providing the link to the repair instructions. I am sure this is a very basic question but I did not get windows media with my laptop. I did create recovery and boot disks - is this basically what I need?

If you got the installation media (usually a DVD) with your laptop, you can do a Repair Install. The installation media differs from Windows media player, note.

See if you can borrow one from a friend who has the same OS. Or contact the computer manufacturer, and if that does not work, you can order the media from MS for the cost of the shipping.
