    virus checker

I have Avast but my trial is up in about 2 weeks and I want a software for 3 computer. I use to have McAfee but it really gums up your system. Anyway what would you recommend? I have a 64 bit OS if that makes a difference.

Ooh, you are getting into a touchy topic. There are many different opinions on this site, and I fear the start of a debate.
As far as I can see, the top free programs on this site are Avast! home edition and Microsoft Security Essentials. The highest rated paid program is Eset.

Personally, I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I find that it is quite lightweight and fast, and does a good job catching threats.

Every post that I have read indicates that MSE is very good. The only less than fully complimentary comment indicated that anti virus updates are not always timely. Bottom line, I do agree with Johnathan and would use MSE, if I decide to change my Anti Virus.

Alright guys, don't hurt me , but I really am impressed with Norton Internet Security 2010, which barely uses any of my system resources... plus each Product Key gives you a license for 3 individual computers.

We are all talking about major companies, that make a lot of money selling their products; bottom line, it is subjective and your opinion is just a valuable as ours.

One thing I wanted to mention since the OP was taking about McAfee hogging system resources, is Norton is conducting a "Performance Challenge":

No one likes a sluggish computer. So we designed Norton™ Internet Security 2010 to be the fastest and lightest security suite you can buy.*

    38% Faster Total Performance

How do you measure performance? PassMark Software found 16 different ways. Combine the results and Norton Internet Security 2010 performs better than any other security suite tested.*
    61% Faster Scan Speed

Norton Internet Security 2010 scanned for malware faster than any other product tested – 61% faster than the competitive average.*
    70% Less Memory

Norton Internet Security 2010 uses close to half the memory of its closest competitor – and a whopping 70% less memory than used by the average Internet security suite.*
    6 Times More Frequent Updates

Norton streams updates to your desktop – providing protection from the latest threats over 260 times a day – or nearly 6 times more often than its closest competitor.**

Well, I use Avast on my main PC, It does that little bit more than the Microsoft offering.
And I go with Microsoft for my daughter's laptop.
You can't go far wrong with either, and they don't cost.
