At the root of this epidemic lay simple social engineering tactics designed, through various methods, to convince victims to pay for peace of mind. Responsible for the actual infections are pieces of malicious code that the software industry refers to under a variety of monikers, including rogue antivirus, fake antivirus, scareware, etc.
