    Antivirus question

Hey, I know this is 7 forums but I have a question.

Upgrading a friends old XP system; its a 7 year old Del Dem 2400. Only has a 40GB HHD and 512mb of ram.

He really cannot afford to do much with it, I have cleaned the HHD and reinstalled XP Pro on it and now I am looking for a free Anitvirus program that uses little resources.

I have not ran XP for so long I can not remember which is the best. MSE seemed to slow this system down so I am ruling it out for now.

    Anyone have any recommendations?

MSE is so-so in my experience. Personally, I'm not big on free AVs but if you HAVE to, Hit up the free Avira AntiVir at free-av.com. From everything I've read, if you have to go free, it'll give you the best detection %. Even over AVG.

    My 2 cents.

If MSE slows the system down then anything else will do the same...

I would say MSE. But he needs some memory even for XP Pro, at least add another 512mb to 1gb.

Yea, 512MB is just too limited! I would buy a 2GB stick if I were him!

I have an old one in the garage (XP Pro 640mb Ram) running Avast & it seems to run okay.
    Acceptiable considering its specs

I found a 1GB stick laying in my junk box; put it in and trying MSE again. Seems to be OK so we will see how it goes for a while.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments.
