I have not had this problem so i cant play around with it to see if i can correct it.
But just out of interest you may want to try lowering the sensitivity or turning off the Heuristics scanning in Web shield & see if it makes a difference? :)

Running Avast Free Antivirus v5.0.462, no problems/issues.
Same settings as the pic above.
Upgraded from 4.8.... to 5.0.447, 5.0.454, 5.0.460 then 5.0.462 in the last week.
SpeedTest.net is showing an average of .025 Mb/s slower with Webshield off.
No discernible difference.
My speed is slow (1.2 mbs on a good day) to begin with so I should be able to notice if there is a problem.
PingTest.net rating for line quality is 'A'.
so i have avast 5.0.418 and i cant update to 5.0.462... its telling me every time that i dont have enough rights (only user in my cpu, admin, and no UAC)
Hallo rixto, try right clicking on Avast in your start menu and then select Run as Administrator.
Then try & update, see if it works? :)

This is just a thought, you have UAC disabled. Was it enabled when you installed Avast.
You could try turning it on & see if that works, it may be why you dont have the appropriate permissions.
Otherwise i would just download the latest installer to your desktop, uninstall Avast.
Then install the new version (preferably with UAC on even just at the minimum) then right click on your installer & Run as Adninistrator.

Edit: The more i think about it, having UAC disabled you are not able to run elevated commands as an administrator,
You can only run commands as a logged on user. (Username/Adminstrator) is not a true Administrator account.
It is only a User account with more priviliges than a standard User account, so in turning UAC off as far as i can make out Username/Administrator only seems to have the privileges of a normal User account.
Well we can only wait & see if it works for you as to wether my theory is right or not
