    Multiple engines

Anyone know if it is possible to run PrevX 3 with Norton 360 v3?

If not, would I be better of running PrevX 3 or Norton 360 by itself?

Not sure which one offers the best protection. I do a lot of web surfing.

I know Norton AntiVirus 2010 was voted best antivirus for
2009, but Norton 360 is a little different and not sure if it uses
    the same engine as 2010.

    Any help would be appreciated

Hi, GeorgeB. It depends upon which version of Prevx you mean. The "Free" version only scans and does not remove anything. The "Cleanup" version removes detected Malware, Viruses, Rootkits, Worms, PUPs, BOTs, Spyware and Trojans. Only the "Protection" version includes antivirus software. Thus, you should not use the "Protection" version of Prevx with any other antivirus software.

Actually, that's untrue. Prevx was created to run alongside other anti virus software. I have run the "paid" version of Prevx alongside Nod32, Vipre and currently the new Avast 5 beta without any issues whatsoever.

You're right, TheIgster. Digging deeper, I found the quote below at Prevx 3.0 for Home and Family

People are often told they should only run one Antivirus program on their PC in order to avoid any compatibility issues - but with Prevx 3.0 we have removed that limitation.

Prevx 3.0 was built with compatibility in mind - therefore you could safely run Prevx 3.0 alone, but there's really no reason why you couldn't also run another security program alongside if you wished, which gives a deeper and more layered overall protection.

    hi !

"People are often told they should only run one Antivirus program on their PC in order to avoid any compatibility issues..."

a-squared can also be used together with other Antivirus-programs,
even though it also has A/V-scanning.

if you want to see how good a-squared is, then take a look:

    a-squared FAQ - a-squared Anti-Malware, a-squared Free, a-squared HiJackFree

"Question: Is a-squared fully compatible with antivirus or firewall tools?
    Answer:
    Yes.

a-squared was originally designed to be a complementary product to antivirus- and firewall software. It is no longer complementary, but instead a full replacement for any antivirus software today. Anyway it's still compatible with nearly all other programs.

If you encounter a problem in combination with another program, please tell us. We will solve the problem as quickly as possible.

Please note, that you should turn off other background guards while running a scan with a-squared. Other guards would check each file twice and the scan would take very long."

    a-squared FAQ - a-squared Anti-Malware, a-squared Free, a-squared HiJackFree

"Question: Does a-squared Anti-Malware replace my antivirus software?
    Answer:
    Until Version 3.5:

No, a-squared Anti-Malware is a complementary program to antivirus tools. It is specialized in finding and removing Trojans, Backdoors, Spyware, Adware, Worms, Keyloggers, Bots and Dialers. Read more at the product page).

    Since Version 4.0:

Yes, with the integration of a second scan engine, a-squared Anti-Malware became a full tool against all types of harmful software, including Viruses.

It doesn't use any random scan engine, but two world class products: The Ikarus Anti-Virus- and the a-squared Anti-Spyware-Engine. Independent tests confirm both top positions in the recognition of Viruses, Trojans, Backdoors, Spyware, Adware, Keyloggers, Worms, Bots, Dialers and TrackingCookies."

Corrine: do you remember the following from a thread on TWCF about VB100 ? :)

i said: "btw, it would be interesting to see the results for MBAM & A2-squared..."

you answered: "This was an Anti-virus test. MBAM and A-2 are anti-malware software programs. However, if you spend any time in the security forums, you'll see that it is MBAM that is used most frequently in removing malware."

If user wants a multiple AV engines, then what better option than using best of available freewares. I'd suggest Avast Home + Spybot S&D / Malwarebytes AM / a-squared Free + Comodo FW / PC Tools FW Plus + ThreatFire (Behavior based detection). Even that's not a good option than got for the best paid defense, G-DATA Antivirus. It has two mighty AV engines build in. Avast & Bitdefender for superior detection & removal. Though, even than, I'd suggest using a specialist Antispyware (Free / Paid) with this for better results.

You have nice suggestions. I know G-data has BitDefender and Avast's av engine but is it worth it to hog all the resources of a regular computer user?

Yes, I remember the discussion. MBAM, followed by SAS, are still the most commonly used anti-malware software programs used when helping people clean their computers.

Most people who use A2 are using the free version, not the paid. Anyway, when A2 is included in VB and similar tests, I'll reconsider my opinion. :)
