bp96, how long ago did you first notice this was happening? Is it still happening now?
Does you Avast quarantine and event logs show any virus history? if so, please post your Avast logs here. A text file attachment (paperclip icon) is preferabl

This has been happening for a few weeks now and is still happening- random popups open up in a new tab and sometimes some websites are redirected. And I ran the scan after a popup appeared so I knew the problem wasn't gone. So I guess there is no solution at all?

Ok, I am now fed up with Windows getting infected with viruses and having to do a complete reinstall, even with the best anti-malware software. I guess I'll have to switch to Linux, Linux Mint seems to be worth a try.

Try a few of them. Sabayon is a vista-like interface.
Ubuntu Studio is excellent for music and video editing.
Ultimate edition comes with Wine and can be used for most windows based games and applications, and has excellent media conversion applications
