"Access denied" when creating bookmark in Favorites!?!

Something that really starts driving me nuts about Windows 7's security scheme is all the idiotic places where this unexpectedly interferes!

I just wanted to save a new bookmark in IE8. For this I first wanted to create a new subfolder in order to keep things a bit organized. To my dismay (to say it politely) I got an error "access denied"!?! Why - for gods sake - can't I create a new subfolder in my own Favorites???

This is one of these cases where security really turns absurd and this eventually triggers users to switch it off!

So, how do I get the necessary rights to save my bookmarks and to save them in an order and structure as *I* want them?

    Hello Michael,

Generally this happens when the folder was imported from another system. It has the ownership of that owner even though it is now on your computer. Having the same username is irrelevant because windows assigns the user a unique ID and that won't match with the new users ID.

Easiest fix I know here: Take Ownership Shortcut

    Hope this helps.

I ran TakeOwnership over my entire Favorites folder (i.e. C:\Users\<myid>\Favorites) but still the same problem. I still get "Access denied" when trying to create a new subfolder in it.

Any idea, what else I could do or what permissions this darn folder(tree) needs to have, so that IE may work in it?

Are you creating the folders from inside of IE?
    Or though Windows Explorer?

Through IE8. Favorites => Add to favorites...
That dialog offers a "New Folder" button, which is what I mean here when I say "creating a new subfolder".

I only ran TakeOwnership from Explorer (for obvious reasons).

Rt. Click on the Favorites folder/properties/Security Tab/Advanced button. Permissions tab click Change Permissions. Click on your users account and the edit button. Check full control and hit OK until all the panes are closed. See if that helps. You will need to be in an account with admin privileges to do this.

    Please keep us posted.

You will not be able to do it from IE. Down in the status bar it says something like Protected Mode enabled, correct? IE is running as a different user from your account, this alone keeps your computer safe from web based exploits in IE.

Bookmarks to your favs on ie11 on windows 7 & it says access denied...

When you can't save your bookmarks to your favs on ie11 on windows 7 & it says access denied...do this.

    Go to your Library Files.

Then, click Local Disk C. (under Computer section)

    Then, click Users

    Then, click Default

    Then, right click, Favorites

    Then, click Properties

    Then, click Security

    Then, click Edit

Then, Under, Allow, check marks all except....special permission
