As Corinne pointed out .. there is a difference between Anti-Virus and Anti-spyware/Anti-malware programs.

    Free:
Anti-malware/spyware programs would include SuperAntiSpyware SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware! and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware |MG| Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 Download

Also free... is Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster by Javacool
Javacool Software ( I recommend both!) You need to update Spyware Blaster often, then click on enable all protection

Another freebie that seems to work well is System Protector Free Edition. When I first ran a scan with this utility, it found a couple of infections that Kaspersky Internet Suite missed. I have the paid for version now and the two applications seem to be compatible while monitoring the processes.

In the past few years, I've used AVG, AVAST, Spyware Blaster, etc., etc.

About 6 months ago I went to MSE. IMHO it's superior. It updates automatically, scans on demand or when scheduled and has a relatively small CPU footprint when it's scanning. Periodically, I will scan with MalwareBytes Anti-malware and Superantivirus Free edition, which will identify the cookies that MSE ignores. I have a clean machine. I highly recommend MSE.
