I'd install MSE -- small, effective and doesn't interefer with your machine in any way.

I probably will, eventually. I just thought I'd dance with Defender awhile first, since its already on there. Is MSE really that much better?
Actually , MSE replaces Live OneCare , which I liked. Defender is just turned off.
A free program from Microsoft ???? Holy Cow

Yes, it's much better than Windows Defender, and provides better security protection. You might consider giving it a try for a bit to see what you think since it's free and can be easily uninstalled if you do not like it.

Windows Defender "Service Has Stopped"

Just in case it is a help to anyone who is getting the "Service Has Stopped" message after booting up their computers, with regard to Windows Defender.

In addition to going to "Services", locating "Windows Defender", and selecting "Automatic", move along to the Recovery tab and put "Restart the Service" into all THREE of the boxes there, i.e. First Failure, Second Failure, and SUBSEQUENT FAILURES.

Do this will make Windows Defender keep trying to start itself and so it will try again to start AFTER all your other boot-up processes have finished. (One of those processes is what has stopped Windows Defender from booting up.)

Next time you boot up, you may get the "Service Has Stopped" pop-up screen, but just wait and once all your other services have finished loading, Defender will suddenly indicate that it too has booted successfully.

The only thing then is that you are left with the pop-up screen. If anyone knows of a way to make it close itself, or, better still, not to even show while it is doing all of the above, please advise!

Currently I am protected by Avast, the Windows Firewall, and Windows Defender, with occasional manual SpyBot checks. I understand that Defender doesn't use a lot of "juice" while running in the background, so I am happy for it run in tandem with Avast Free Edition.
