Every time I have installed a new program that tries to connect to the internet Windows has blocked it until I have said ok. Maybe it's the windows firewall in conjuntion with MS security essentials?

But it does block by default on my machine.

    Hi there
just block any Registry changes or block access to WRITE on the "C" (or wherever your OS is installed) drive apart from the Temporary folder.

That way you won't be able to install anything other than Portable Apps which don't kill the machine anyway.

Make sure that only an ADMINISTRATOR account can make changes and use your system as a "Normal User".

I bet 90% of users on these forums run in "administrator" mode all the time --- just ask any Linux user -- you wouldn't run as ROOT doing normal every day work.

This is BEFORE you need to worry about installing decent AV software.

    Cheers

What's funny is, I know some primary Linux users that do know you run as a user and then you su <password> or enter a password in a gui EVERY time you need to do anything to the system (and I mean ANYTHING). But they still complain a blue streak about having to click "ok" to a UAC prompt in windows for the exact same purpose :P

Sometimes I just don't get people :) Can you imagine the complete state of apoplexy if people were required to type their password into that prompt instead of juct clicking ok?

i know that WF blocks installed programs, but it doesn´t block fx. a spyware from "calling home".

run fx. Comodo´s Leak Test (CLT), and take a look yourself...

it doesn´t block (ALL) outgoing connections.
