Mcafee over MSE

Hi all
The ONLY way to keep a computer 100% safe is of course NOT TO USE IT --but in the Real World I'd say that the DESIGNER of the OS (I.E Microsoft) is probably the MOST qualified in designing suitable software to protect it.

Previously when MS wasn't interested all sorts of 3rd party vendors leaped in to fill the void but now MS is in the game then IMO MSE is more than sufficient for normal protection.

Mcafee like a lot of other Corporate software got going when they were the only people in the market.

IMO their time is UP -- in any case most corporations who need SECURE PC's won't have any external connection to the Internet for that particular group of PC's and any data that is transferred to those PC's would be very carefully vetted first.

Of course if you are an inveterate user of torrents and dubious warez sites then I doubt whether ANY AV product could keep you reasonably safe in any case.

For the typical home user I suspect that MSE is sufficient - and uses minimal resources too.

My philosopy would be that IF a computer gets infected is THEN to RESTORE from a KNOWN CLEAN IMAGE or re-install the OS.

I would NEVER trust a "cleaned" computer just relying on the AV software to do it.

Using an infected OS to clean itself is as I've said before like putting the Fox in charge of the chickens in the henhouse.

As for INTEL buying Macafee -- not sure what they get out of this since you obviously can't build Malware protection into a CPU which only knows about running machine code instructions. There isn't any OS to protect.

Now if Intel was working on an OS of it's own or even an alternate browser --that's a different matter of course.

Microsoft Security Essentials is nice small and comfact with high reliability. Highly recommended in my view!

The link that Borg 386 has to the one topic of McAfee has some good stuff in there. I was one to comment in there because I used McAfee through my internet provider for a while. It failed me with in a couple of days and I never used it again. It found 2 hidden Trojans in the system when I did a manual scan. So before that scan was ran, those Trojans were having a party in my system no doubt.

In my time I've Used Norton, McAfee, Bullgaurd, Avast, Avira, AVG and MSE.

I wouldn't have Norton, McAfee or Bullgaurd ever again. They have too much stuff going on and as far as I'm aware hog system resouces. With each one of them I've had a huge virus that has riddled my computer. the last on infact was Bullgaurd, I got some file and then within about 5 minutes nearly all my shortcuts where broken and the computer was going mad.

In all the time I've used, Avast, Avira, AVG and MSE (all free might I add) I've never had a single virus not get caught, or at least that I was aware of. The systems didn't die so I was pleased. AVG give me some gip on Vista and wouldn't update so I scrubbed it. Avast was 100% but I switched to Avira because of good reviews. It too was great. I changed to MSE just becaue I like software to be uniform. I've yet to have a problem with it. I tried the 2.0 beta but had trouble with it switching off.

So for me MSE 1.0 is working away fine. I also scan with Malwarebytes. Both have kept my system ticking over just fine.
