Hi all, need your help here. I have used avast for several yrs on my xp laptop and it always automatically updates once, sometimes twice, a day. I now have a brand new laptop with pre-installed windows 7. Absolutely no probs whatsoever and loving W7. But since Thursday when i bought laptop and immediately installed avast it is no longer automatically updating itself. I have Home Premium 64-bit; is there some kind of known problem or does it need updating less on 64-bit/ I would hardly think so:huh:.

Since Thursday I have manually updated avast and it insists 'program is up to date etc' but today i manually updated and it did update to release date 13/3/2010. But it should not need manual intervention on my part.

My update settings are set as default: automatic update and my proxy settings are also default: Auto detect (use Internet Explorer settings) although I use Firefox. I have just noticed the Update Options menu and this is set to auto-update every 240 mins.

Can anyone help or enlighten me. Thanks as always for your help folks.

Hi there, thinking that you're using the Avast 5 latest version, it updates automatically. Reinstall the program and see if it helps. :)

Yes indeed D : 5.0.462. I suppose I could reinstall; just wondering if there was something wrong with my settings. I can't understand why it does not automatically update. Anyone else and ideas? Thanks.

Well I guess Avast 5 has lots of bugs. I have mentioned one bug here.
Hence I uninstalled Avast and will wait till it becomes stable. :)

Yes, I did see that post before. Such a shame really; and I know Avast is free and it's an awesome antivirus package but I'm really surprised they are not resolving these problems. Perhaps it's just affecting 64-bit windows I don't know...puts me in a dilemma as I really love Avast. Oh well.

I had a quick look and it prompts only for version five. Sorry to be a pain and thanks for your help. Otherwise I might have to switch to MSE. A shame as I've always loved avast.

Thanks Peb, I might give that a go. I am reluctant to go back to version 4.8 but might not have a choice. Does anyone still think there might be a prob with my settings after reading my first post? I'd also like to say that Avast is 'running'; the small icon rotates as i browse the web etc. It's purely a problem with automatically updating that I have - and cannot understand why. Thanks.

Finally, click on "Test connection" to test whether the internet connection (based on the entered settings) works.

This if from the avast help info program and the Test connection button is missing from my settings. Weird! Really wish avast would resolve these problems; it's always been really reputable in the past.

One thing to check that caused me some problems - make sure that the "My computer is permanently connected to the Internet" is checked, in the avast settings

For some reason my install did not do this on install, and I had the same issue with no auto update. Do this even if you have dial-up connection, and as long as you are on-line when Avast is set to update it should do so. If you are off-line, avast will keep trying to connect and it should update the next time you go on-line

Had a look at my install on a xp box and found some settings that might affect your updates. I did not have the test connect button. Maybe your firewall is blocking you? Good luck to you with this problem. :)

OK folks, Peb, I did as u suggested: removed, ran ccleaner, downloaded and installed version five again. Barman, thanks, as done as u suggested (this was unticked before). Only time will tell I suppose but this does look promising: as soon as I installed it fetched the updates automatically as it usually does. Thanks so much for all your help. I will leave the thread open perhaps until the next update - that way i will know conclusively.
