Windows 7: Which antivirus is best for win7

30 May 2009   #171

Win 7 Ult SP1/Win 10 Pro (all x64)

You think that you have them setup to work with each other. Wait until one cancels the other one out when a nasty comes in and you have to format and reinstall.

Never run 2 anti-virus applications together. It's OK to run an anti-spyware application or two along with 1 anti-virus, but you are asking for trouble running 2 or more A/V.

However, as you guys seem to think you know best so I'll give up the argument.

I get it all the time over at McAfee too. Which makes me feel like....

There's always the alternative way of dealing with it of course.

I was using AVG but have switched to Avira for anti-virus.

I'm also using Ad-aware (run scans manually, as needed), Spybot S&D (run scans automatically, daily), Windows Defender (automatic operation w/ scans daily) & Comodo (firewall, only).

Ill give you some advice on defender-

Set it to notify for software not yet catagorized for risk, and to notify if software permitted to run makes system changes on its own

This is why:
If for example, you download a app, that has not yet been classified for risk and this app included a new nasty little undetected bug, that decides to download another bug that makes system changes- you are alerted, and can disable, prevent the run, and if neccesssary remove the app BEFORE it executes its package.

This works in conjuction with UAC, but as opposed to UAC, the user has already permitted this app to run thus UAC will not prompt. Otherwise, Your system becomes infected, and one day in the near future, when there is a definition available, it is then flagged by your AV, but the damage is already done.

Avast! 4.8 Pro

I also have SUPERAntispyware Free running, along with Spyware Terminator, and my laptop runs fine.

Compaq Presario C751NR Notebook PC
Intel Pentium Dual-Core CPU @ 1.6GHz (not overclocked)
Vista Ult. 32bit/Windows 7 Ult. RC1
120Gb HDD (111Gb usable)
And all is well.
I challenge you to add eset on that list and still have a living System!

but yea who cares if you run two anti-virus or more its still just the same as one :) your loss(resource) not ours =D

I like my avast. Small memory foot-print. Good detection rate. Totally happy with Avast.

Kaspersky 2010 anyone?

They just came out with version 2010.0.0.459 recently and it officially doesn't support windows 7, but it seems to work o k with it so far. You really have to be extra careful when uninstalling Mcafee some times. I used their clean uninstall tool, and some of my programs didn't work right afterward. I had to fix them by using system restore. It seems that the uninstall tool took some things out that it shouldn't of, but system restore saved the day. The only reason I uninstalled Mcafee is because you can't manually add programs to the trusted list, so it would remove some good programs files saying that they were infected, but they are not, but you couldn't tell Mcafee to leave these program alone, so after every scan Mcafee did, I had to manually restore these programs. So I'm giving Kaspersky 2010 a whirl. So far so good.

antivirus for Win7 & Linux Mint?
My current OS is Win 7 Pro 32 bit on one HD, but I'm thinking of installing Linux Mint 64 bit on an extra HD and alternating between the two. I would only be using one OS at a time on alternate HDs. What would be a good antivirus, free or paid, to cover both? Or should I go for two different...
