Yeah it's free you just need to register it every year to get new keys. go ahead and download the Avast Free Edition and register it.
Boy I have tried many. I don't use free ones. Just went form Trend Micro to Webroot A/V just to try them. T/M doesn't expire until Dec. I have always wondered why one would think that a free version would be as good as a paid version. If that was true said company would never sell a A/V or F/W. A paid for version only cost a few pinnies a day. I and my system are worth that much.
AVAST FREE woot woot
The Free AV solutions are on a par with the paid ones. The makers simply make their money in different ways. For Microsoft it ia one more reason to use their OS and for, say, Avast - they have a commercial offering for large organisations.
The fact is that in all independent and rigorous testing the free AVs are right up there with the most expensive - often getting better results than the best known paid for AV solutions.
Really for simplicity, seamlessness and reliability as well as excellent rating in independent testing MSE is a no brainer. I use Avast (free - the paid for version adds nothing that matters) and it too is reliable, easy to use and has a very small footprint.
Really I would be more wary of some of the paid for solutions, some of their testing results are at the lower end of the scale. Fact is that not one of the AV solutions offers absolute certainty, some are not a strong with some of the malware and some don't clean-up an infection as well as others.
