WinDefender Check for updates Error 0x80070422

Avast Free Antivirus took a crap on my windows 7 again.

I uninstalled Avast, ran CCleaner, then ran Glary Utilities, then entered safe mode and ran cleanmgr from cmd (admin), then ran a clear memory cache file, and finally restarted the system normally. I then enabled and turned on Windows Defender and when I checked for updates it said...

"The program can't check for definition updates. Error found: 0x80070422. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. Go online to view troubleshooting tips.

It took me to a Microsoft webpage that mentions there's a problem with not defender but with windows updates and to fix it follow the steps at "this page". It directed me to Windows Updates in Control Panel.

Now that Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7, what problems will I run into if I enable and run windows updates?

Is there a better solution to the Windows Defender Check for updates Error 0x80070422?

None. It sounds like you may be missing the last Windows 7 Updates. When was the last time you updated?

    Hi WWE,

When a 3rd party AV is installed, WD is dissabled.

IF you did not remove Avast in SAFE mode using thier uninstaller its likely the 3rd party marker is still present, therefor it will not run/update.

BIG note Defender is only an anti-spyware NOT an anti virus, MSE is the AV

    Use Kaspersky free myself

Open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Defender and turn it on.
