QFT! I didn't even have antivirus for several years, 5+, and NEVER got a virus..
I still don't have one when running XP. I do use Real Time Defender HIPS and SRP.

I have written a big article about AV these days - how they really (not from marketing point of view) works and how reliable they are. Unfortunately this article is in polish language (however there is google automated translation but it doesn't work perfect), so If anyone is interested just send me a PM.

Norton Internet Security 2010 is a very good product.Comodo personal firewall would be an added protection along with other standard security practices.

I use Norton Internet Security 2010 and have found it non-obtrusive with minimal resources required. Scanning is fast plus most of all - detects malware and any virus lurking..Initially I was reserved about purchasing Norton (due to past experiences with earlier Norton product conflicts with hardware/software) but give it full marks now.

Cheers,

Graeme

Common sense can certainly protect you against a multitude of problems, however it cannot guarantee safety.

For example, a forum site that I regularly participate on and have for years got hit with a SQL injection and the admins didn't know it. So, when I attempted to visit the site...like I do daily, my AV products went off saying something was fishy and it prevented me from going any further.

This site is also very much trusted by me...but you simply never know if the site was hijacked, or DNS was hacked and thus redirected to another site that looked the same but packed a nasty payload.

These are the types of examples that I don't understand how people believe common sense can prevent.

On my wife's Vista machine, we use Avast. on my Windows 7 box I use MSE. I run MalwareBytes on both and use SpywareBlaster on my machine as a preventative measure. On my work machines, I use Trend Office Scan.

I have one suggestion that is not mentioned as of yet and I would like to recommend it to you for the just in case something would get through and cause havoc. As always make a backup of your system from day one that way it will be reverted to and run just like new again if anything would take your system down. I try to keep the latest version of HijackThis - Trend Micro USA on hand for my more tech savvy friends to look over and help out with in the case of an emergency. Please if you would ever have to use hijackthis do not make any changes to anything unless you know what you are doing. They will tell you more on their site. It is a very useful tool for that just in case.
