In reply to the question about the firewall...I'm using Window's firewall and Windows Defender for spyware...Avast is the only 3rd party software in the protecting area. Maybe that's the problem...I mean not using Windows anti-virus software. I'm going to assume that's the issue and continue with Avast and no anti-virus messages from the Action Center. Hopefully I'm well covered.

Yes, almost certainly nothing to worry about, I was just trying to decipher why the discrepancy. My setup is identical: Windows firewall, Windows defender and Avast; Home Premium 7.

Tried that a couple of times...no difference. I hesitate to uninstall and reinstall since I'm not having a problem with Avast...only the Action Center or Windows 7.

True, I would not bother either although having said that a reinstall did resolve an earlier problem (Avast not automatically updating) I had.

Avast no longer automatically updating on new W7 laptop

Avast running like a top, knock on wood. Thanks for your help, by the way!

Thanks everyone for the assistance. It doesn't seem to affect the performance of Avast, and I am using version 5, the most recent. So I think I'll just disable the notices...it's apparently a problem only in the eyes of the Operating System.

Nice choice with Avast. I wonder what accounts for the difference in the OS (action center I mean) not seeing Avast. Do u have an additional third-party firewall.
    .
In Windows XP it was sometimes necessary to rebuild the repository to correct inaccurate information in the security center. Can this be an issue in Windows 7 as well?
I wonder if that may be it, because I installed Avast 5 on my dad's new Windows 7 desktop, and Windows Security recognizes it just fine, so this is not a universal occurence.
