a-squared is pathetic, too many false-positive, a good tool to scare a novice user.
relying in router firewall is a bad idea, they don't block http ports, and malware today is smart enough to bypass routers firewall, besides you need control of outbound traffic in your local machine, you don't like programs and spyware calling home freely.
Tell you what... you can scan my IP anytime you like... all ports are fully stealthed, you won't even know there's anything there, much less penetrating an 8 machine LAN.
As for A-Squared... well, I think I'd rather get a few false positives than have some monster, ram eating, cpu heating concoction running full time and accomplishing nothing but wrecking my system's performance.

If you are looking for a free alternative Avast! 5 Free is a good bet.
I would have to agree with you on some this if the user is experienced and comfortable enough to run naked. I have run machines form time to time no antivirus and never had a problem. You have to know exactly what you are doing when you run this way and still you risk getting something and never knowing about it until your next scan.
However I don't think it is the best advice to give someone inquiring about antivirus protection. If he was comfortable enough then he would not be asking the question.
A-squared isn't bad but I prefer running a combination of Spywareblaster(which doesn't use any resources), Malwarebytes, SAS, and adding entries to my host file. I don't use any real time anything except for Nod32 and Windows Firewall. I am behind a router and I keep my machine clean so their is no reason for a 3rd party firewall.
It is all about experimenting and finding what works for you.
As far as security software goes, I'm not actually using the programs I prefer because they seem to conflict with each other on this computer. Regardless...

I don't disagree, not even a little bit.
I would however like to suggest that a lot of what goes on in computers nowadays is not the result of experience or skill. A lot of it is because people don't know a whole lot of what is going on and tend to follow the crowd, which is most often made up of other people who don't really know a whole lot of what's going on.
For this reason I think it's important to give people all possible points of view... yours being as valid and important as mine. People learn from these debates and, many times, so do I... education that basically says "follow the crowd" may not always be the best message to give, especially to someone interested enough to ask questions.
IOW... Disagreement isn't always a fight.
I was merely filling an "information gap"... no contest was intended.
Another good program to look at is SypWare Doctor with AntiVirus. Some good reviews on the internet.
