Yeah, after going through What's the Best Anti-virus?
I too was a bit unsure of Avira & wanted to go for Avast. Is that what you are trying to point?
I would choose Avast over Avira yes.

VIPRE did not catch it but so far in my testing it does not catch anything. This is the most USELESS AV software I have ever used.

McAfee 8.7i wouldn't even let me save it, it was screaming before I could do much of anything.

Tally: McAfee v8.7i = YES
Vipre = NO

Edit: VIPRE also has bad support. Never reply to issues and are arrogant about their software telling me that it is impossible it works perfectly. 3 different test machines can't be wrong.

Same, but my real-time protection is enabled! But when i tried to download the antivirus test file Avast 5 immediately stopped me downloading it.

Like I said before about Avira, maybe Vipre knows it isn't a real virus and ignores it. However, I don't think that this inspires much confidence

Agreed, however I have done many other tests, posted in other Threads where VIPRE has failed. At this point I will not recommend it and would tell people to completely avoid it. On a special test machine the machine has become infected 8 times so far with VIPRE installed. Installing another AV and disabling VIPRE will clean up the machine. Lay down a fresh image and start all over with another AV and everything is caught, so far only VIPRE is failing all the tests we have thrown at it.

Uninstalled Avira & installed Avast, still it did'nt detect the file.
Saved it twice, once on the desktop & then in the documents but nothing.

Yeah, but on manual scanning the file it did say 'Threat Detected!'.
